At MGP Master Garden Products, all our natural brown willow products are kiln dry and heat treated to ensure products longevity in outdoor. Kiln-drying can remove as much as 9/10th of the moisture, making it resistant to fungal decay. It also kills insects, larvae, eggs, bugs, and mold, increasing the life of the products. The kiln is turned up to 150 degrees on the final days of drying, which kills larvae and insects. Kiln-drying also sets the pitch, which means the sap is crystallized and will not seep out later. The crystallized sap will form a productive layer. It will also form a water repellent layer on the products to help present products integrity.

Ourdebarked willow material come in 2 different form, one is the natural debarked willow and carbonized willow, the natural debarked willow is followed by steaming to kill any germ or bacterial from the ground, the other way is carbonized processed in high pressure steam chamber, the process will kill all insects, larvae, eggs, bugs, and mold, and take out the sugar content in the willow poles, the lack of sugar make our carbonizes willow products less to insert infection. The high heat also will turn the sap in the willow to crystallized and form the water repellent layer over the wood.

As the willow panels trellis dry with age they become loose. You can simply nail the larger pieces together. for smaller branches you can use galvanized wire to tie  them together. Just like any products used in outdoor, a good maintenance to the key to keep the products in good shape.

Yearly maintenance is very important to prolong and upheld the quality of willow products. After first year, you may apply any of the 2 types of preservatives, a light colored creosote which is highly effective, but not plant friendly, or a water based preservative which is plant friendly but not as effective. Alternatively, the traditional method of preserving willow is to lightly paint a mixture of boiled linseed oil and turpentine 50/50.

Some people prefer to allow the willows to age naturally.  Willow material will age to a silver-grey color, and therefore do not need to be treated with any kind of finish. If you wish, you can use a preservative to extend their life and should be painted on after the hurdles has had time to dry, depending on what kind of  weather conditions, which can take a few weeks to a few months for the drying process.
